Google opens purchased Play Books inside Gemini Notebook
Expert Intelligence lets a reader query a title they already bought. The launch catalogue is licensed trad-publisher stock, not the open KDP backlist.
Why it matters. A licensed ‘ask this book’ feature is now live. Indies are not in the first wave.
On 27 August Google launched Expert Intelligence: selected ebooks bought from Google Play Books can be added to Gemini Notebook so answers, quizzes and audio overviews are grounded in that book. Google says users must own the title. The opening shelf is more than 100,000 books from houses including Penguin Random House, Macmillan, Bloomsbury, O’Reilly and Johns Hopkins, plus featured notebooks with a handful of name authors.
This is not Amazon’s ‘Ask this Book’ experiment and it is not an invitation for every KDP title. For indie authors the near-term question is distribution: a Play Books listing is the door. Watch whether Google later opens a self-published path, and do not assume metadata written for the Kindle Store will be how a notebook cites you.
